Lucid Mattress Topper Review

The Lucid mattress topper has emerged as a favorite among consumers seeking enhanced comfort and quality in their sleep experience. As one of the most popularly purchased and highly rated mattress toppers on Amazon, Lucid has garnered a loyal following and this is why we took the opportunity to test out the toppers using our 2 stage review process. As we discuss our findings we shall delve into the various types of Lucid mattress toppers available, each designed to cater to different sleep preferences and needs. From gel-infused memory foam to plush down alternative options. Join us as we explore the standout features and overall performance of Lucid mattress toppers.

Lucid Gel-infused Mattress Topper

Lucid Gel-infused Mattress Topper

If you like the pressure-relieving qualities of memory foam mattress toppers but are not ready to invest in a new mattress, the Lucid Memory Foam Topper could be just the product for you. In addition to its medium feel, this 4-inch topper is designed with gel infusions, meaning it won’t trap excessive body heat like traditional memory foam models.

What we like:

  • Gel-infused foam conforms closely to the body without bottling up heat
  • Foam cradles the sleeper’s body and minimizes pressure buildup
  • The all-foam design promotes excellent motion isolation
  • Four thickness options available

What we don't like:

  • Might be too soft for stomach sleepers

Construction and Design

The Lucid topper is made of gel memory foam, designed to conform closely to the sleeper’s body. Measuring 4 inches thick, the mattress topper can significantly soften your mattress and alleviate pressure from sleeping on an old mattress. This topper is offered in 3 other thickness options, with the 2-inch model being the firmest and the 4-inch version the plushest. Lucid often sells their mattress toppers without covers as they’re designed to be placed under fitted sheets or mattress protectors. However, if you want a machine-washable topper that’s easy to clean, consider the 2.5-inch model with a removable cover made from bamboo-derived fabric.

Mattress Topper Performance

The Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper performs exceptionally well in various categories. It boasts a durable design that gives it a long lifespan, especially if properly cared for. Moreover, it conforms to the user’s body, relieving pressure and minimizing motion transfer.

Let's go through the Lucid 4-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper’s performance ratings in great detail.

When it comes to firmness and feel, this topper boasts that slow-sinking-in feel you'd expect from a memory foam mattress topper. During testing, it contoured around me a lot, which I found to be really cozy. I'd say it was quite plush and squishy and seemed to offer an excellent amount of pressure relief.

Because of its conforming, some sleepers may find the Lucid Memory Foam Mattress too warm for comfort. However, it’s infused with cooling gel beads and has tiny pin core holes to promote maximum airflow. These features make the Lucid topper a cooler alternative than the regular memory foam models.

Foam mattress toppers are usually sought after for their pressure-relieving features, and the Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper is no exception. It’s specially designed with gel memory foam to contour perfectly to the shape of the body and relieve pressure. Note that your weight and sleeping position can greatly affect how and where you experience pressure. This topper’s medium feel gives it excellent pressure relief for back and side sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds.

Speaking of edge support, foam mattress toppers often lack sturdy edge support since they don’t have reinforced perimeters. However, the Lucid 4-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper offers better-than-average edge support than other all-foam versions. Individuals weighing less than 230 pounds are likely to receive adequate edge support. However, due to the topper’s medium feel, sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds may notice sagging around the edges, especially when getting in and out of their mattresses.

The Lucid Gel Memory Foam Topper is known for its conforming capabilities, which means it molds closely to the body. However, this property can limit your topper's responsiveness, as the surface won't bounce back as quickly as other responsive materials might.

Sleeper Type and Body Weight

Your body weight and preferred sleeping position play a significant role in determining how firm or soft your topper should be. Generally, a bed topper should offer sufficient cushioning for you to be comfortable and prevent uncomfortable sinking that may compromise proper spinal alignment.

Back sleepers usually keep a neutral posture when they sleep but require an even, supportive sleeping surface to promote proper spinal alignment. Conforming foam, like that used in the Lucid Mattress Topper, benefits the lumbar region and cushions the back to relieve pressure. However, the mattress topper might be too soft for back sleepers weighing over 230 pounds. If your lower back presses into the surface too much, it might cause spinal misalignment.

The Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper is also ideal for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. These sleepers need a soft to medium topper to sink in just enough to experience its conforming benefits. This minimizes pressure on the hips and shoulders. Those weighing more than 230 pounds may find this topper too soft and experience excessive sinking, leading to back or neck pain.

Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds will find enough body support from the Lucid topper to keep their entire body on an even plane. Its medium feel cushions the chest and shoulders while supporting the hips. However, those weighing over 230 pounds may find the topper too soft to encourage healthy body posture as they sleep. Their bodies will likely sink deeper into the memory foam mattress topper, resulting in spine misalignment

Lucid Lavender-infused Mattress Topper

Lucid Lavender-infused Mattress Topper

If you're a memory foam fan and you'd love to upgrade your old mattress with the relaxing scent of lavender, this 3-inch Lucid topper might be all you need. Its thick, plush comfort layer distributes body weight evenly, alleviating pressure around painful pressure points.

What we like:

  • Memory foam layer contours easily to the body, reducing pressure points
  • 5-zone design delivers targeted support and comfort
  • Lavender infusion offers a calming effect, which promotes relaxation

 What we don't like:

  • Might not be ideal for heavyweight sleepers

Construction and Design

The Lavender 5-zone Memory Foam Mattress Topper is among Lucid's most advanced products. It's specially designed to sit directly on the surface of your mattress covered in a fitted sheet or mattress protector. Its primary comfort layer is made of CertiPUR-US-certified slow-moving memory foam, meaning it doesn't contain toxic chemicals. During testing, this layer allowed us to sink into the surface and conformed to the unique shape of our bodies. Plus, its 5 unique zones helped alleviate pain in sensitive body parts. The comfort layer is lavender-infused, which gives it a slight scent that promotes relaxation and a good night's sleep.

Mattress Performance

Like other Lucid mattress toppers, the Lavender-infused model is engineered to soften your sleep surface by adding a plush layer on top of it. This mattress topper generally feels like a medium-firm topper, so if you're currently using an overly firm mattress, the Lucid Lavender-infused Mattress Topper is a perfect way of adding some plushness. While its quicksand-type feel offers excellent body contouring, it makes it slightly difficult to move on the surface.

This mattress topper is superior to most memory foam toppers when it comes to temperature control. It features cooling gel beads that draw excess heat away from the body to ensure a cooler sleep experience. What's more, the topper's ventilated design promotes maximum airflow, which further helps keep the sleep surface cooler.

Another thing we loved about the Lucid Lavender-infused Mattress Topper is how well it relieved pressure, thanks to its gel-infused memory foam. It helps in evenly dispersing weight across the surface, keeping your body parts from bearing too much. Plus, the soft layer conforms to the body, cushioning painful pressure points.

The Lucid Lavender-infused Mattress Topper has an above-average edge support for a memory foam topper. Generally, innerspring and hybrid mattress toppers boast sturdy edges compared to memory foam models, thanks to their coil support systems. With strong edge support, you'll be able to use the entire sleep surface without the fear of falling off the bed.

As a memory foam topper, the Lucid Lavender-infused Mattress Topper doesn't offer the easiest surfaces to sleep and change positions on. During testing, I felt that the hug of the foam layer created difficulty anytime I tried to change positions. So, if you're a combo sleeper, I wouldn't recommend you opt for a highly conforming bed, such as this lavender-infused model from Lucid.

Sleeper Types and Body Weight

Most sleepers should feel comfortable on the Lucid 3-inch Lavender-infused Mattress Topper, especially when sleeping on their back. Its zoned design offers excellent lumbar support and proper spinal alignment, which is helpful to these sleepers. The medium firmness level also makes this topper a perfect match for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers. However, stomach sleepers might not get the support they need from this mattress topper.

Lucid Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper

Lucid Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper

The Lucid Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper is an all-foam topper that cradles the body with a plush “sink-in” feeling to prevent painful pressure buildup. Strict hot sleepers will benefit the most from this topper's bamboo charcoal infusions.

What we like:

  •  Deep contouring minimizes pressure buildup along your spine
  •  Excellent motion isolation for couples and co-sleepers
  • Charcoal infusions reduce heat buildup to keep you cool at night

What we don't like:

  • There might be a strong off-gassing smell upon unboxing

Construction and Design

If back pain affects how you sleep, a soft memory foam mattress topper can deliver the relief you deserve to rest comfortably. The Lucid 3-inch Bamboo Charcoal comprises adaptive foam that does an excellent job of making a firm mattress soft. This foam layer boasts a dense composition that contours closely to cushion the body, distribute weight evenly, and minimize pressure points around the lumbar region and sensitive parts along the spine. The foam is also infused with bamboo charcoal to help dissipate heat and keep the topper cool and odor-free throughout the night.

Mattress Performance

When talking about feel, I like to start with firmness, as it's more likely to give shoppers an idea of how they'll experience the topper. After lying on the Lucid 3-inch Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper for a while, I gave it a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This means it's just a touch softer than a medium mattress topper. After spending a few nights on the topper, I felt more cradled by the surface than lifted by it. The topper also comes in a 2-inch and 3-inch model to enable you to customize your sleep environment to your unique needs. Generally, the thicker your mattress topper, the softer the surface will feel.

Several factors contribute to your topper's cooling capabilities, and its overall design is among the first aspects we look at. Unlike other foam mattress toppers, which tend to sleep hot, this lucid topper uses a bamboo charcoal-infused layer of comfort foam, which helps wick away excess moisture, regulate temperature, and minimize odors. Some layers are also infused with gel to prevent overheating and enhance the topper's ability to regulate body temperature.

Pressure relief is another area where the Lucid Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper performs extremely well. Its foam comfort layer conforms closely to the sleeper's body, which helps minimize pressure points. Side sleepers who often put a lot of pressure on sensitive joints should benefit the most from this topper's pressure-relieving capabilities.

Edge support typically measures the strength of your topper's perimeter. If your mattress topper has sturdy edge support, it should allow you to sit or lie down on it comfortably without collapsing too much under your body. I think the Lucid Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper has pretty good edge support, especially for a foam topper. However, I'd recommend heavier sleepers and couples invest in a hybrid or innerspring topper that can enable them to spread out across the surface without feeling like they're going to slip off while sleeping near the sides.

Generally, memory foam mattress toppers tend to have a low response to pressure, while hybrid and innerspring models boast a high response to pressure. If you're a combo sleeper, you might have a hard time moving on the surface and changing positions, as this topper lacks the bounce needed for a responsive surface.

Sleeper Types and Body Weight

This topper's memory foam design enables it to adapt to different weights, perfectly balancing overall body support and comfort across various sleep positions. I think this is a solid pick for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers and side sleepers, especially those who love a pressure-relieving feel. It provides enough support to allow these individuals to maintain proper spinal alignment, but it's still plush enough to contour to the curves of their lower back. However, I don't think stomach sleepers and heavier folks will find what they need from the Lucid Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper. I'd recommend a firm model instead.

Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper

Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper

The Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper is easily one of the best down alternative mattress pads on the market today, thanks to its superior loft, luxury feel, and exceptional value.

What we like:

  • Offers strong pressure relief
  • Superior loft
  • Excellent value

What we don't like:

  • Needs fluffing every few days

Construction and Design

The Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper is made of a 250 thread count and a 100% cotton percale for a plush and breathable sleep surface. This cotton shell incorporates baffle box stitching to create evenly sized chambers that promote loft and prevent the fill from shifting and clumping. Another feature that makes this fiber bed topper a favorite in many down alternative mattress topper reviews is its piped edges and an extra thick elastic strap on its corners that help secure the topper to the mattress. If you're a strict hot sleeper, you can opt for the 4-inch Gel Down Alternative Mattress Topper, which incorporates gel infusions for cooling comfort. The topper also comes in a 2-inch and 3-inch profile to help you further customize your sleep setup.

Mattress Performance

Overall, the Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper should soften your sleep surface by about 3 to 4 points. It boasts a fluffy sink-in feel that makes the body sink deeply into the surface, allowing for lots of cushioning around pressure points like the hips and shoulders.

Like anything fluffy, I was concerned about the Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper being too insulating. I tested this topper during the summer season, and I'm happy to report that I had zero issues with sleeping too warm on the surface. The cooling gel beads dissipate body heat, and the memory foam features tiny holes to encourage airflow. These components work together to maintain a cooler sleep surface.

Like other Lucid mattress toppers, this down alternative model is engineered to relieve pressure by conforming to the body's unique contours and evenly distributing weight across the surface. Its sink-in feel enables your body to sink into the surface just enough for excellent pressure relief.

Unfortunately, there isn't much support on the edges of this topper by itself. The mattress I tested it on is a firm foam model, so when I sleep or sit near the sides of the mattress, I don't slide off. The Lucid Down Alternative topper had no significant impact on the edge support of my bed, and I think it will majorly depend on the firmness and feel of your mattress.

While the Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper is designed to provide excellent pressure relief, a vital aspect of responsiveness in a topper, it is slow to regain its standard shape after you sleep on it. This might make moving on the surface and adjusting sleeping positions slightly difficult, so I wouldn't recommend it for combination sleepers.

Sleeper Types and Body Weight

I can confirm that the Lucid Down Alternative Mattress Topper is a solid pick for back sleepers, and due to its soft feel, it should also be fine for side sleepers. However, this will majorly depend on the type of bed beneath it. I'd recommend stomach sleepers give this topper a miss, as it might not be firm enough

Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper

With its traditional memory foam construction, this Lucid topper instantly adds plushness and cushion to a firm mattress. It delivers excellent motion isolation and is a solid pick for sleepers who prefer soft mattresses that don't compromise on support.

What we like:

  • Contours to your body and relieves pressure
  • Controls motion transfer well
  • Above-average temperature regulation

What we don't like:

  • Heavyweight folks might not find enough body support with this topper

Construction and Design

The Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper isn't exactly your standard topper. It features 2 inches of traditional memory foam that offers the much-needed support and balance for a good night's sleep. Unlike other foam toppers I've previously tested, this model is ventilated to prevent heat buildup. So, you won't have to worry about waking up sweaty and surrounded by excess heat. While it doesn't have straps, it comes with a no-slip bottom that helps keep the mattress in place all night long. According to the company, this topper features CertiPUR-US certified and hypoallergenic foam, meaning it's free from harmful chemicals and less likely to trigger allergies. This mattress topper is also available in a 3-inch profile for sleepers who prefer an extra thick cushioning layer.

Mattress Performance

Instantly, I could tell a big difference with the Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper in place. Unlike the down alternative model, which had been more pillowy, this topper felt much more supportive. Its foam layer adds softness to the surface for targeted pressure relief without compromising overall body support.

Because I sank deep into the mattress topper, I assumed I'd sleep too hot. However, I was surprised that I slept comfortably and sweat-free throughout the night. When testing out this topper, room temperatures climbed to about 85°F. I never felt that this topper slept any hotter compared to my usual mattress. While I wouldn't say that the Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Topper made me significantly cooler, I slept much cooler than expected.

According to the company, the Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper is engineered to offer excellent pressure relief by contouring to your body and distributing weight evenly. As a sleeper who often suffers from frequent stress that can keep me up at night, pressure-relieving support is what I need, and that's precisely what I got from the Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper. This was thanks to its medium-firm feel and foam construction, which provided the conforming support I required for a good night's sleep.

If you're seeking enhanced edge support, the Lucid Traditional Memory Foam topper might not be the perfect fit for your needs. Standard memory foam usually conforms to the body, and this can lead to less support around your topper's perimeters. Here, you may want to opt for an innerspring or hybrid model, which features reinforced edges.

Like other memory foam sleep products, this Lucid mattress topper is known for its slow-moving and quicksand feeling that makes sleepers feel like they're sleeping in the surface. This means that while the Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper can deliver great pressure relief, it might not be as responsive as couples and other sleepers would like. So, if you prefer a mattress topper that quickly adapts to movement, a latex or hybrid model might be more suitable.

Sleeper Types and Body Weight

As a side sleeper, the Lucid Traditional Memory Foam Mattress Topper delivered just the right amount of body support I was yearning for, and I felt like I was resting in a hotel for the few weeks I slept on it. It also features a no-slip bottom to ensure it fits perfectly on the mattress without moving around. As a person who often moves around at night, I can confirm that this topper was comfortable in all positions. However, stomach sleepers might want to choose a thinner or firmer alternative, as both the 2-inch and 3-inch models of this topper are likely to develop lasting body impressions with time, which could lead to less support.

Which Lucid Mattress Topper is Best for Me?

This greatly depends on how you sleep each night. We all have unique needs based on our preferred sleep position and weight.

If you're a back pain sufferer, Lucid's zoned mattress toppers should provide the necessary lumbar support and spinal alignment for pain relief.

If you like memory foam's close body hug, you should enjoy any of Lucid's mattress toppers, depending on your preferences.

If you're a hot sleeper, I'd definitely recommend Lucid's Gel-infused Memory Foam Topper and Bamboo Charcoal Mattress Topper. The gel infusions and bamboo charcoal absorb body heat and sweat, helping you sleep cooler.

If you're a side sleeper, you'd want to opt for a softer topper that alleviates tension around your lower back and shoulders. Lucid's down alternative model is plusher than the memory foam models, making it the best mattress topper for side sleepers.

If you're on a budget, the Lucid 5-zone Gel Memory Foam Topper is your holy grail. Aside from being highly affordable, it offers the perfect balance of comfort with pressure-relieving and cooling properties, making it a versatile pick for most sleepers who need to improve their sleep quality without a significant investment.

In Conclusion

Overall, Lucid's mattress topper collection stands out as a versatile option that caters to a wide range of sleepers. If you're dealing with an outdated mattress that has lost its firm feel over the years, I'd absolutely recommend one of Lucid's soft mattress toppers. They add a plush thickness that not only feels hotel-like and soft to the touch but also keeps sleepers from running hot at night. For a small amount, you can transform your sleep surface from drab to fab without shelling out for a brand-new mattress.
